New York Recreation

Recreation in New York City

Sporting Events

If there is one thing New York doesn’t lack, is professional sports teams. There are two teams in each of the five professional sports: hockey, baseball, football. basketball and soccer. Thus, depending on the time of year you are visiting and/or what sport you follow, there is a good chance you can view an exciting game. If hockey is your sport, there is the choice of seeing the New York Rangers at the historical Madison Square Garden in Manhattan or the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. In 2015 the Islanders are moving to Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn.  The professional baseball teams consist of the Yankees who play at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and the Mets who play at Citi Field in Queens. If it’s the NFL that really strikes your interest then you should check out the Giants or the Jets who both play at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. To watch pro basketball, check out the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden or the Brooklyn Nets at Barclay’s Center.  Lastly, for soccer fans, there is the New York Red Bulls who play Red Bull Arena in New Jersey and a new  soccer team arriving in 2015, the New York City FC.  Regardless of what sport you prefer, there are many different sporting events that you can enjoy while visiting New York City.

Adventure

If you are visiting New York and enjoy being active and outdoors, there are a lot of adventurous activities that will allow you to enjoy a different aspect of New York.

Check out New York City Department of Parks and Recreations website for information pertaining to boating, canoeing, sailing, and kayaking. You can rent a boat and paddle along some of New York’s beautiful and pristine waterways.    The Parks and Recreation Department also offers information about fishing, hiking and scavenger hunts—lots of great outdoor family fun.

If a boat tour is something you are more interested in then there are many harbor cruises available. You have the option of going on a 90-min daytime Statue of Liberty cruise or the Statue of Liberty night cruise.

If visiting in the winter time you can go ice skating at many different park rinks such as Central, Prospect or Bryant Park. One of the most famous skating rinks is located at Rockefeller Center which opened for the first time in 1936 and if you visit in December the majestic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree will be on display.

Overall, regardless of which season you are visiting this wonderful city, there are many recreational options available. Whether it be renting a bike in Central Park, exploring the waterways or skating at one of the many locations, there are many active options for you to participate in NYC.
